For a long time, getting a discreet hearing aid meant giving something up — less power, no rechargeability, or limited wireless features. That trade-off is gone. A new generation of hearing aids fits almost entirely inside your ear canal, runs on a rechargeable battery, and delivers the same technology you'd find in a larger device. If you've been putting off hearing aids because of how they look, it's worth knowing the options have changed significantly.
At our La Cañada Flintridge practice, we now offer several of these devices for patients who want excellent hearing without anyone noticing they're wearing a hearing aid.
Oticon Zeal: The World's Most Discreet, Complete Hearing Aid
Introduced in early 2026, the Oticon Zeal sits almost entirely inside the ear canal — most people standing next to you won't see it. Oticon calls it the world's most discreet, complete hearing aid, and unlike older invisible styles, it doesn't cut corners on performance.
The Zeal runs on a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with up to 20 hours of use per charge. Need a quick boost? Fifteen minutes in the charger gives you four more hours of power. The internal components are sealed inside a solid protective shell, making it resistant to moisture and debris — the same durability you'd expect from a much larger device.
Sound processing is handled by Oticon's Sirius platform, which uses AI to continuously adjust to your environment. You can also stream audio directly from your smartphone, TV, or tablet, and it works with Auracast technology for public broadcasts in venues like theaters or airports. In many cases, we can fit you the same day.
Signia Silk Charge&Go IX: A Fully Invisible Rechargeable Option
The Signia Silk Charge&Go IX is a completely-in-canal hearing aid with nothing visible from the outside. It offers up to 28 hours of battery life on a single charge and a feature called Own Voice Processing — which helps your own voice sound natural to you. That's a real adjustment issue for many first-time hearing aid users, and Signia has put genuine effort into solving it.
Note that the Silk Charge&Go IX does not offer Bluetooth audio streaming — a trade-off Signia made to fit rechargeability and advanced processing into such a small shell. You can still control it wirelessly through the Signia app. It also includes built-in tinnitus therapy, which can be helpful if ringing in your ears accompanies your hearing loss.
Why These Devices Are So Much Better Than Before
Older invisible hearing aids were limited by what could fit inside a tiny shell — weak processors, no wireless capability, and disposable batteries you'd swap every few days. That's changed because the underlying technology has caught up. Smaller chips, more efficient AI processing, and better battery designs now make it possible to pack full hearing technology into something most people won't notice.
This matters more than it might seem. Many people delay getting help for hearing loss simply because they don't want to wear something visible. When that concern goes away, it's easier to take the step — and better hearing has a real impact on communication, relationships, and overall well-being.
Prescription Hearing Aids vs. Over-the-Counter Devices
You've probably seen over-the-counter (OTC) hearing devices at pharmacies or online. For someone with very mild hearing difficulty, they can provide some benefit and they're easier to access. But there are meaningful differences.
A prescription hearing aid is programmed specifically to your hearing test results. That means the amplification across different pitches matches your individual pattern of hearing loss — not a one-size-fits-all average. You also get ongoing care: adjustments as your hearing changes, troubleshooting when something feels off, and support to make sure you're actually getting the most out of the devices.
If you've tried an OTC product and felt frustrated with the results, or if your hearing loss goes beyond mild, a professionally fit hearing aid is worth exploring. The experience is genuinely different.
What to Expect at Your Consultation
We don't believe in steering every patient toward the same device. When you come in, we'll review your hearing test results, talk about your daily life and listening situations, and figure out what actually fits your needs — whether that's an invisible style, a rechargeable behind-the-ear option, or something in between.
There's no pressure and no rush. We take time to make sure you leave with a device you're confident using.
